The Business

Origins.

Josh Nicholson founded Burnt Phoenix while attending university in the ACT in 2007. For the next five years, he contracted for various government agencies and private clients, including Zoo Advertising, Lockheed Martin and the Australian Taxation Office.
By 2012 it was time to take the next step and grow.
Establishing a local resource pool of sub-contractors, Josh’s unique business model allowed diverse and specialised input while keeping face-to-face client services in one place.

Relocation.

In 2013 Burnt Phoenix moved to Nowra on the NSW South Coast. But we continued to work with our existing Canberra client base – an ever-growing list we maintain today.
This move allowed us to provide an open-door service to the Shoalhaven – something, we might add, that’s been embraced wholeheartedly by the community. We love our local businesses and are proud to call many of them great friends.

Expansion

Since opening the new office in Berry Street, Burnt Phoenix has continued to grow exponentially. Grace joined the team in 2018 and Nathan in 2020. We continue employ local talent when the opportunity allows – from budding illustrators and awesome photographers through to 3D animators and spectacular designers. It’s also been our pleasure to welcome a steady flow of enthusiastic work experience students.

Coffee-loving Chino Wearing Bearded Man (but don’t judge) Digital Genius.

Josh graduated his bachelor of Graphic Design and Media Production with 1st class honours in 2009. He has experience working for large design agencies in Canberra and is the founder of Burnt Phoenix. Ask Josh about how much he loves Papyrus and Curlz MT (don’t do that unless you’re armed with coffee and sticky date pudding). With a love for digital and print Josh continues to explore all things design and media.

Grace Simpson

Senior Graphic Designer

An optimist, with a passion for making things look fantastic. Grace finds beauty in the simple things.

Enjoying web-based design & creating brand identities, plus more recent experience in signage design, she’s always focusing on real-world applications that others may overlook. A tangible & practical approach that proves invaluable to our clients. Graduating in 2012 with an Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design and a Euro “study” trip up her sleeve, Grace has a ton of knowledge and technical skill to bring to her role at Burnt Phoenix.
A Jervis Bay local, she has a love for the coast and is a self-appointed red wine & cheese connoisseur.
